n contrast to St. Olaf's ELCA connection, Carleton's lack of religion allowed for an open dialogue. Or at least that's what I thought. Yet after attending St. Olaf for three years, I realize that a religious affiliation can lend itself to a richer academic conversation.

Once again, I am compelled to address the callous and easy arrogance of privilege that is the only dialect that many journalists can speak in the journalist's tongue. Compelled, but for what?
The same arrogance that speaks through the two-page spread on what whiteness (and Macalester?) likes already views its own writing as incomplete without some partial, self-interested or "tribalist" response-so why should I or anyone otherized by this conflicted drivel even respond? What could be gained from filling this role, stepping into the chalk already drawn out for me? No matter what its content, my response will simply be met with "disdain" by this overwhelmingly white campus.

"What is 'Hell Week'?" That was the first question I asked when I heard about the event. I do not participate in athletics at Buena Vista University (BVU), so this year was the first I had heard of "Hell Week." For those of you who have no idea like I did, "Hell Week" is the week after fall sports teams finish their respective seasons and go on a weeklong drunken rampage.

I'm going to come right out and say it: I'm a political moderate. A little anti-climactic for you? Well it shouldn't be. The word moderate gets tossed around a lot by people these days. They refuse to pick a political party because they don't like being grouped in with "those people.

Free Press is censoring its readers
The Mankato "Free" Press shut down its on-line forum after comments were made which they deemed too controversial. These topics ranged from politics to local job layoffs.
I understand the Free Press hosting this type of a forum is a small conflict of interest yet a newspaper should hold the right of free speech above all else.

Does anyone else ever feel like some deity - God, Allah, Buddha or Oprah - is messing with you? That is the best way to describe how I felt a few Saturdays ago when I participated in a 5K run. The handful of people who know me can attest that within the last year I have been a fitness enthusiast and spend many nights at the weight room to lift or jog.

A few minutes ago, I approved my 128th "Facebook" pal. Do I hear hurrah? Okay, I do not have to blow my own horn as it is too small a number compared to many other members who probably are growing their list of friends every day, even reaching the cap of 5000.

Let's talk about sex. More specifically, let's talk about male contraceptives. We all know what men mean when they ask, "Hey, you got any rubbers?"
Now, imagine if the conversation about safety changed. Can you imagine men saying, "Dude, you got a can of spray on you?" Or the two people getting down to their hot moment in bed and the man says, "Oh wait, honey, I better spray before we start.

Hey, guys - have you figured out who Edward Cullen is yet?
He's a whole lot more than some vampire in one of the most popular book series since Harry Potter - he's the man of your girlfriend's dreams. Unless you're the world's greatest boyfriend (and you're not; Edward is) you need to keep reading.

On Nov. 15, after the Illinois-Ohio State game, 9,000 Illini alumni and current students gathered in Assembly Hall to watch what many refer to as a ceremony of "honor" or "respect" for the University of Illinois and the Illinois Confederation; however, "Chief Illiniwek" is nothing more than a dishonorable and disrespectful display of condescension.

At the conclusion of what seemed like a never-ending campaign in 2008, voters came out in droves like never before and elected Barrack Obama to be the next president of the United States.
The majority's voice rang loudly across the country and there was great jubilation, but what message did Obama supporters send? They shouted for a change, a shift away from the Bush administration and the unpopular policies that congress had adopted in the past eight years.

I want sex so good I can't walk.
I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, pull Excalibur from the Stone, do the Sunday New York Times crossword in pen - obtain the Holy Grail of female sex: have a G-spot orgasm.
Those somewhat mythical, elusive orgasms define the pinnacle of great sex and are far less fictitious than you might believe.

Every so often, faculty members get a little break from teaching. Students that have never heard of sabbatical may think it's just a vacation, but that's not the case.Faculty members are researching and working in their field of study in order to help improve their teaching methods to provide students with the best information and opportunities possible.

Although I am lucky enough to have parents who are still together, many of my peers do not. The divorce rate has risen immensely in the past century, and sometimes I wonder why. When my grandparents were growing up, divorce was not considered. It was something that happened rarely, and when it did, it was the cause of much discussion.

Sometime over the weekend, someone slid a copy of last week's Messenger under our door. On it, they had capitalized all the words in headlines (only on the front page) and written that we needed to "edit better" on top of a comment reading "not professional."

On the evening of Dec. 16, 1773, more than 150 Americans boarded English ships loaded with tea from the East India Company in protest against "taxation without representation." But this was not merely an act of dissatisfaction, irritated Americans expressing their frustration towards a government that did not represent their interests.

It is well-known that all walks of life have made journeys to the Iowa City area to pursue incredible endeavors. We have the Writers' Workshop, one of the leading hospitals in the nation, and an esteemed engineering program. And although most of these aspirations pertain only to education, there is at least one other reason that Americans make their pilgrimage to this part of eastern Iowa: the Hamburg Inn is the mecca of diners.

Minnesota's gay couples deserve equal civil rights Should Minnesota be among the states that puts into law anti-equality legislation, or should we be among states that protects gays and lesbians who have same sex partners? Well, many states are passing legislation prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and or gender identity.

The decisions made this past week to lessen the penalties surrounding one certain leafy green plant has left many proponents of medical and recreational marijuana (not horticulturists) swooning. In Massachusetts, voters elected to decriminalize up to an ounce of the substance. Similarly, voters in Michigan voted in favor of Proposal 1, which will now allow the prescription of medical marijuana in the state.

To the Editor:
Since the letter by Jalene Betts and Anne Johnson about the troubling drawings in the winning Macalester Step Forward video was published in the Oct. 31 issue of The Mac Weekly, I have been trying to determine how it was that the video was shown under college sponsorship with racially insensitive imagery, in particular the image, as the authors of the letter describe it, of a "white Macalester student's hand reaching out to save the brown, faceless figure sprawled in a heap in the dirt.
