For the third time in seven years, the road to a January bowl bid goes through Minnesota for head coach Kirk Ferentz and Iowa, a seven-win team setting up for a crucial regular-season finale on Saturday night in Minneapolis.
Of all the extracurricular story lines for the Hawkeyes to draw upon this week - from Floyd of Rosedale to junior halfback Shonn Greene's worthiness of Heisman consideration - perhaps none has been more overlooked than Ferentz's track record in such games.

The Jacks gave an answer through drubbing UW 64-44 at Frost Arena on Nov.17 in front of 2,812 faithful fans.
The Big Ten Badgers came out with an 8-0 lead.

The Jackrabbit football team has been known to give fans near heart attacks in the last few years. With that spirit, here are some of the high and lows of the 2008 football season.
High: The Jackrabbits started the Missouri Valley Football Conference the right way, as the Jacks beat both Western Illinois and Youngstown State who were both ranked in the top 25.

This past weekend, the men's and women's cross country teams were running low on time and on rides to the Des Moines International Airport to fly to regionals in Oklahoma. Head Coach Dan Hostager asked if any of the athletes knew other people who had a car.

A linguistics major would describe Kirk Ferentz as monotone. The 10-year head coach places emphasis on a word about as often as legendary Hawkeye announcer Bob Brooks misses an Iowa football game.
But in the basement of the Hayden Fry football complex after his Nov. 18 press conference, Ferentz morphed into Herm Edwards when he talked about Shonn Greene.
"If you look at the numbers, those are so impressive," said Ferentz, doing his best Scott van Pelt impersonation.

Last year's Blackshirt defense didn't give Nebraska's video staff much material for their "Hits of the Game" highlight reel.
The segment is shown on the jumbo screen inside Memorial Stadium during the fourth quarter of Cornhusker home games and reflected Nebraska's porous defensive showing in 2007.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Matt Slauson called it "classic Nebraska."
Nebraska's senior offensive guard was talking about the option rushing attack the Cornhuskers employed during NU's 56-28 victory at Kansas State on Saturday, but he might as well have been talking about the game in general.

It's one of those things all coaches invariably say during the course of the season. Usually toward the end of the year, they talk about how much they've enjoyed coaching their players and how they'll remember this year for the rest of their lives.
Kirk Ferentz morphed into that stereotype at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. But, in this case, there's a distinct difference between Ferentz and others who have expressed the sentiment: This isn't the first time the 10-year head coach has praised his players without being asked by the media.

Jackrabbit starting quarterback Ryan Berry is no ordinary student athlete. He has won a conference championship, earned nearly a 3.9 G.P.A. and is a senior leader.
Former teammate Reed Burckhardt has said that Berry was a great teammate and everybody on the team would back him on that.

It seemed like a normal Tuesday at Nebraska's weekly press conference.
That all changed quickly once practice was about to end.
Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini made the decision to officially hand out the tradition-rich Blackshirts that grace the pads of Nebraska's top defenders, but in the midst of the good news, Pelini also suspended one of the team's standout defenders.

As a sports fan, last weekend was overall a pretty good one for me. Two of the three football teams I follow won. In addition to rooting for the Beavers, I'm an Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings fan. Iowa's win over then third-ranked Penn State was obviously impressive.

When the Minnesota State soccer team left Winona two weeks ago following a tough loss to Winona State, the deflated Mavericks dropped to fourth in the Northern Sun standings and fifth in the region rankings.
The mood was much more positive Sunday, with MSU players' faces showing smiles, not frowns.
