B-V-U was a popular phrase tonight at Schoenecker Arena as the Buena Vista University men's basketball team met the University of Saint Thomas Tommies in the first round of the NCAA D3 basketball tournament. Buena Vista emerged the winner 72-70 and will play in the second round.
The Beavers came out a little cold missing their first few shots, but after the nerves settled there was no holding back. The Buena Vista Beavers came back from being down in the first half to jumping out ahead by as much as 14 before ending the first half with a 5 point lead.
As the second half started, the Buena Vista beavers came out strong. The beavers lead the whole half and were sitting with a 10 point lead with 3:30 left in the game. After 4 turnovers the Tommies tied up the game at 68-68 with only 1:33 left.
Senior Rahn Franklin made clutch free throws in the last minute to ensure the Beavers victory. When all was said and done, the Buena Vista Beavers managed to knock out 18th ranked University of Saint Thomas by a final score of 72-70.
Travis Person was the leading scorer for the Beavers with 12 points, while Rahn Franklin adding 8 points and the ending free throws at the end of the game. The Beavers had 28 points from their bench and shot 47% from the field.
The Beavers gave Saint Thomas their first home lose of the season and hope to continue their success tomorrow at Schoenecker Arena. The start time is 7:00 PM against 9th ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
